Until the Forth Bridge was opened in 1890 the only way to cross the Forth here was by ferry boat.  When the Forth Road Bridge was opened in 1964 the ferries ceased to operate after being established by Queen Margaret in the late 11th century.   Now an anchor lies where once cars queued and a plaque states
'This admiralty style anchor was discovered in the river Forth by Calypso Marine and once refurbished by Network Rail was donated to North Queensferry Heritage Trust. Originally from a sailing ship, it dates from around the time the rail bridge was under construction. The symbol of Hope and Safe arrival, the anchor is situated here as an age-old custom to welcome all who travel this way.”
