No Swimming

The rain has continued this week adding to fields already under water. Airplanes are being used to spray the crops as the sprayers can’t get into the fields without getting stuck. The crops are beginning to fail, so far the canola has already lost a quarter of its value.

Today going into town I saw the indomitable spirit of a farmer who has had enough and decided it was time to laugh at it all. So he did this.

I don’t know if you can see it but he’s put up a sign on the right that says “No Swimming.” Then he created a sharks fin and installed that in the field as well. Through the week he’s added two more fins into the mix and the joke is clear. He can laugh or cry and he is choosing to laugh.

I expect some farmers won’t make it through another bad year but who knows. Maybe the wheat will be a bumper crop or maybe the insurance will cover some of the losses.

They are generally a pretty optimistic bunch these farmers. Some even have a sense of humour.
