Generally patterns in nature tend not to deviate much from the norm which surprised me to see the variations in numbers of stigma rays on the seed heads of the Opium Poppies, frequently on the same plant. These are heads from four poppies which are all growing adjacent to each other and one plant had some with seven, eight, ten and eleven rays. A count indicated that about half had eight rays but the numbers varied from six to twelve with more on the smaller common poppies in the garden.
