Big steps forward
Our gym has taken social distancing seriously and was open for business at 7.00.
I took the photo at five to seven. There were quite a few waiting too, but I don’t think they were quite so aware of the new world. This is where we are supposed to wait.
I was first to arrive but two who arrived after me were clearly in the Cummings mode.....they just walked to the front. I think that’s the dilemma. Some people think it’s all over.
The company have been meticulous (but are not asking us to book which I think they’ll have to reconsider.) I’d seen some of the things other gyms have put in place. Yes - many lockers are out of use and there are signs and sanitiser, but all our routes are the same, and we could go into the changing room before our swims.
My pool is the outdoor pool. I was first in. Well over four months and it felt so good. OK the water was a bit too warm. But I could finally stretch out. My knees eased. I was shattered after only 20 lengths. It was a reminder of how quickly you can lose fitness.
It felt wonderful.
There were only four of us in the outside pool.
Inside there were lots more and it looked no different from the old days. In the changing room people were relaxed but respectful. But we were so keen to catch up with friends.
Big steps. Early days. Let’s hope they don’t serve to take us backwards.
