On guard

My brother-in-law drove us down to The Forest of Dean today for us to take a walk through part of it whilst the girls went over to Bromsgrove to take another of their sisters out for a birthday lunch.
We parked close to The Speech House Hotel and went from there on to one of the many paths criss crossing the forest. We also walked alongside some of the cycle trails until we reached the Cannop Ponds. 
From there we walked on a path taking us along the bank of the first pond where we came across a young couple fishing whilst their dog sat next to them. As we approached he stood up and started looking up and down the path as if on sentry duty! No barking, just looking.
I think he might be a French Bulldog but will be very happy to be put right on this as I'm sure one of you will be able to confirm if it is.
