Ferragosto

Happy Ferragosto!

Ferragosto (Feriae Augusti, Augustus' rest, Emperor) is a holiday of Roman origin (it fell on the first day of August, but today it coincides with the religious feast of the Assumption), celebrated throughout Italy. It is the day of trips out of town, in search of fresh air, and grilled meat (even if the ones in the photo are gnocchi alla romana, and I'm at home).

In Roman times, the end of agricultural work and the subsequent rest were celebrated, and even today, in popular culture, it is the most representative day of summer holidays.

Il Ferragosto (Feriae Augusti, riposo di Augusto, Imperatore) è una festività origine romana (cadeva il primo giorno di Agosto, ma oggi si fa coincidere con la festa religiosa dell'Assunzione), celebrato in tutta Italia. E' il giorno delle gite fuori porta, alla ricerca del fresco, e delle grigliate (anche se quelli nella foto sono gnocchi alla romana, ed io sono a casa).

Ai tempi dei romani si festeggiavano la fine dei lavori agricoli ed il successivo riposo, ed anche oggi, nella cultura popolare, è il giorno più rappresentativo delle ferie estive.
