Determination
It's been a brilliantly sunny day, with the wind steadily building in strength. I had time, today, to get back to my volunteer photography work for ArtUK, and went to Sheffield railway station to get some images of an enormous stainless steel sculpture that sits alongside the way into the station. It's just over 80 metres long, a curving structure called Cutting Edge. It's blade-shaped, representing the city's history in steel production.
Usually there is water running over the surface and down a channel at its base. But in the time of Covid, all city centre fountains and water features are dry and silent.
Anyway: I enjoyed walking around it, experimenting with different angles and with the way that the polished steel surface reflected a blue sky and a scattering of fluffy white clouds.
Then I saw this tiny girl, scaling the stepped stone fountain structure that faces the Cutting Edge. Of course it's dry too, and it offered a perfect opportunity to climb and explore. Here, she's caught facing into the wind, fists balled, a picture of determination. There's a second picture in Extras, showing more of the structure and picturing her when she was planning her climb.
