A little visit
My friend J decided to drive up from Leeds to see me this afternoon which was a much appreciated distraction. We had plenty to catch up on having not chatted much over the last 3 months. We had a potter round Durham enjoying the sunshine and I took her up to the cathederal for a walk round the cloisters... I just love the feeling of serenity in that building, particularly in the chapel at the back end of the cathederal where Bede is buried. There's a lovely sculpture-thing above his tomb which reads "Christ is the Morning Star who, when the night of this world is past, brings to his saints the promise of the light of life and opens everlasting day". Given that "saint" in this context is anyone who trusts in Christ rather than a catholicism-type-awarded status-title, it's immensely encouraging to be reminded :)
There was a little sermon illustration which helped me this morning, knowing I'm facing uncertain times... We were looking in John's Gospel at the conversations Jesus was having with his disciples just after Judas has left, off on his way to the High Priests to betray Jesus. The disciples don't fully realise it but they're facing a time of immense uncertainty, fear and grief where they'll face rejection from families and communities for standing by their Lord. Jesus reassured them that he had prepared a place for them and he would lead them there. They simply had to follow him...
My path (however hard the next few months may be, depending on the result of the next few weeks) will never compare to theirs... so I'll just keep following and trusting where he leads...
