Italian Chapel

This is the Chapel that the Italian POWs built towards the end of World War II out of left over scraps of material. Their day job was building the causeways that link the three southern isles - South Ronaldsay, Burray and Lamb to the mainland of Orkney but with the agreement of the British camp commander they were allowed to build this in their spare time. You can see how inventive they were if you look at the lantern (top right) which was built out of tin cans. The painting of the madonna and child behind the altar is particularly effective.

For my extras I have included a statue of St George and the Dragon which the first thing they made and a panorama from the Head of Bora which is reminiscent of all of the low lying scenery of southern Orkney.
