This plant is often called toi toi but this is a miss-spelling of the Maori name toe toe.
This particular plant was growing around a pond area within a reserve we visited for a picnic lunch.

Today was an around ‘home’ day with a drive north along the beach from Himatangi to Tangimoana, another small coastal settlement, for a picnic lunch in the sheltered Ellison Reserve.

For safety, the tide was on its way out, but it was still an exciting trip with the windy conditions pushing the waves up the beach necessitating us dodging the logs/driftwood lining the high tide mark.
