History on the prairies
These old grain elevators used to be located in the towns along the railway lines all through Western Canada. The local farmers would deliver their grain to these tall prairie landmarks each autumn and winter.
From there the grain was placed on trains and either sent to the grain ports on the West coast of Canada, or to Thunder Bay up on the lakehead of the Great Lakes for ships heading east.
For many years it was the only way to go.
But as farms increased in size the demands for more room in the elevators grew. These old “small” elevators couldn’t do the job. So great big concrete ones were built in larger locations and most of these were toppled over. Now there aren’t so many left here on the prairies.
This town, Austin, still had its though. So we stopped for a picture. Maybe it will be a historic pic as so many are disappearing.
It’s like looking at a piece of history.
