Portuguese…
…………………….....…….Man-of-War
In Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, they are also referred to as Blue Bottles.
It has been a busy day and no photos were taken so I am adding this ‘Man-of-War’ which was one a many we found washed up the day we arrived at Himatangi Beach, NZ.
Most were covered in sand, but this one looked particularly pretty, especially when seen in large.
The following information is from the National Geographic website. If you have time to click on the link, it makes interesting reading.
Not only is this not a jellyfish, it's not even an "it," but a "they." The Portuguese man-of-war is a siphonophore, an animal made up of a colony of organisms working together.
Thank you very much for your continued visits, comments, stars and hearts. It pleased me to see the shark released and swimming through the surf to freedom. I had hoped to catch up with journals this evening - perhaps tomorrow.
