The Old Forge (Thursday 24th September 2020)

I noticed this the last time I was in the study loft, so when I had to go back there today to store some cardboard boxes I took a camera with me. I think it may be an old wasp nest but if anyone knows better I will update this entry.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Miracles - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (recorded by 16 August 1966, Hitsville Studio A, Detroit MI)
As you can see I am still inside my Motortown bubble, exploring the Motown archives in my collection. There's a scene in the documentary film Hitsville: The Making Of Motown where Smokey Robinson of the Miracles and Motown founder Berry Gordy make a bet over whether Gladys Knight or Marvin Gaye recorded Grapevine first (Marvin Gaye, but the Gladys Knight version was released first). The Holland-Dozier-Holland song had actually been written in 1964, when the Funk Brothers band track was made for it, and the first act to record it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles in 1966, though it was not released. The Isley Brothers, the Temptations and Undisputed Truth also recorded versions between then and 1971, and the Miracles returned to it in 1968 for a version that was released on the album Special Occasion, but this is the original first version, that surfaced in 1998 on the album Motown Sings Motown Treasures. I played it on this day from a more recent freebie Uncut cover disc Summer Of Motown.
