MAKING NEW ROAD

Bicycle riding again today. Decided to check out the progress on connecting the county road to the highway. I was talking to the men who do the paving while they were waiting for a new truckload of asphalt (a.k.a. Blacktop, Bitumin, etc.)
These guys are experts as many of them have been doing this job for 20 years or more. The paving machine is fiendishly complicated but lays down a nice layer of black gold.

I regularly ride this road on my bicycle and I can tell you that its present state of disrepair will shake out the fillings in your teeth as you traverse it. This is a welcome change even with the inconvenience of it all.
EXTRAS: 1) paving machine requires 3 operators. Imagine the mind of the engineer who designed this monstrosity; 2) the truck backs up to the hopper and dumps fresh asphalt onto it...the machine spreads it laterally and to the correct thickness all the while heating it to boiling temperatures; 3) a solid sheet of new asphalt several inches thick is laid down nice and smoothly; 4)The whole unit is pushed down the road by the machine until they run out of materials...then they pause until another truck load comes in; 5) finally the roller come in and compacts the material into a very hard surface. Then they do it all over again with a second layer.
