"This is Manchester..."

Out for dinner, this evening, in Chorlton, with the Minx, Abi, Charlie, and Hannah, and this was on the wall. It is, of course, attributed to Manchester's cultural legend Tony Wilson. Or Anthony H Wilson if you prefer.

According to Simon, AHW never actually said this (and he pointed me to this post as proof) but rather the line was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce for the film '24 Hour Party People', which I would, incidentally, heartily recommend.

Oddly, it doesn't really matter. To Cottrell Boyce's credit, it is a quintessentially Tony Wilson thing to say: it might as well have been him.

And personally, I love the philosophy. We're slaves to our feudal and colonial past in this country, repeatedly electing governments that don't have our best interests at heart. Why do we keep electing Etonians?!

So, yes, wherever you are, let's do things differently here.

PS We can't talk about Tony without watching this.
