Derelict...
...parking lot. In 1920 the Lakeside Power Plant was built in Saint Francis on the bluffs above Lake Michigan. It burned pulverized coal, & it's been said that the lighted smoke stacks from the factory were visible to ship captains for miles off shore. This parking lot was across the street from the plant, and was used by all the employees. The plant closed in 1983, & when Tom & I bought a house here in 1987, just a few blocks away, the plant was an abandoned building and the parking lot sat empty. An investor bought the lakeside land in 1985, and mid-summer of 1987 he had the abandoned factory demolished. The land sat empty until 2004, when the first of the condos were built. The land across the street with the parking lot reverted to the city and has become, over the past 30-some years, open space filled with insects, birds and small animals, but parts of the concrete can still be seen. Thanks to Marlieske for hosting DS. :))
