Scenes from Mount Nebo loop scenic byway

We enjoyed some spectacular views today as we took the Mount Nebo loop scenic byway, which crosses the Uinta National Forest between the cities of Nephi and Payson. It climbs to over 9,000 feet in elevation and provides breathtaking views of Utah valley, the Wasatch Mountains and 11,928-foot Mount Nebo, the tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range. We also hiked a little way up the trail to the summit of Mount Nebo - about 6 miles return. Jen has climbed all the way with one of her hiking groups, but that was a few years back now. The All trails app. says the first three miles is “easy” - well I’m sure it is easy compared to what comes later, but it was enough of a workout for me, especially at over 9,000 feet! A unique scenic feature along the byway is the Devil's Kitchen Geologic Interest Site, shown in my thumbnail photograph. The spectacular red color of this amphitheater, with its spires reminiscent of a miniature Bryce Canyon is a brilliant contrast to the mountain greenery surrounding it.
After two weeks of hiking in amazing mountainous scenery, tomorrow it is time to return home. It’s been a wonderful trip, and so good spending time with Jen and Jason after so long. I’m so thankful to Jen for all her planning, driving and cooking while we were in the Tetons, the loan of their car for us to go to Moab area and thanks to Jason for his cooking and baking while we were in Salt Lake City!
