'Profunda cernit'

This crest with an eagle and a family motto - 'profunda cernit' - has been placed in a brick wall which blocks a previous entrance to a local estate. I have no idea who lives there now.
Searching through Google it says the motto can be traced back to the Gourlay family whose baronial home is in Lothian in Southern Scotland dating back to at least 1066!! And the translation is 'He comprehends profound things' but it is anyone's guess what that might mean....
