Beech tree

An afternoon walk around Callaly.

First, up through the woods to the hill fort on Castle Hill. A short walk to the top, but very steep in places. Not much evidence of the hill fort, but there's a tranquil atmosphere about the place, and some amazing old beech trees. Most of the trees at the top of the hill were holding on to their green leaves, but at the bottom many were changing into their autumn mantle (extra). Unfortunately, we saw several grey squirrels in a tree on the way down.

Next, a stroll along the roads through the village and on to a spot where MrM spotted a red squirrel whilst on a cycle ride last week. No squirrels today, but it was a pleasant walk past Callaly Castle. Somewhere in the grounds there's a clock - maybe a church clock - with very sweet-sounding bells that chime every quarter hour. Wore my thick winter jacket for the first time this autumn, and was glad of it as we walked back to the van.
