Spa Town
Had a walk around some of the roads/streets/drives of Ilkley this afternoon.
In the mid 19th Century, Ilkley expanded as a 'Spa Town". Catering for the fashion amongst upper class society for spa water treatments and with the opening of the railway in 1865, Ilkley was booming.
This led to some serious Victorian houses being built - particularly just below Ilkley Moor.
This is 'Belmont' on Queen's Road
- my (limited) research informs me it was built in 1891. I have no idea why the number '75' is emblazoned on the left hand gable - nor do I know what the iron 'lantern' is - but the house impressed me :-)
