Dere Street...
...at Whitton Edge.
No suitable supermarket delivery slots available, so this afternoon we drove over to Kelso to fetch a 'click' and collect' order. Wet and gloomy in the morning, the day had brightened up considerably by the time we drove through the Scottish Borders. Far too nice to come straight home, MrM drove us back by a very long way round, and we enjoyed some scenic views and fabulous autumn foliage. We stopped off for a while at Whitton Bank, by Dere Street (the main Roman Road in to Scotland, in use by the Romans between AD 78 and AD211, it ran from York to the Forth), from where there are fabulous views across the Borders in one direction, and the Cheviot hills in the other. In the distance, to the left of the photo, is The Cheviot.
