Binge
With no children in tow and no plans, I had promised myself a day of doing absolutely nothing.
Foolishly, I had forgotten that when you’re going away with children for a few days, there is a fair amount of planning and work that goes in at the front end to ensure that the time away is spent well. Cue doing a couple of loads of washing, walking between rooms looking thoughtful and remembering what you went in there for, random thoughts about food to include (whipped cream and marshmallows to compliment the hot chocolate!) and many changes of clothes, because The Youngest will without fail fall into, over or on something that will leave her in need of a new outfit.
I also squeezed in a run and so regular has my route become that I was awarded “Local Legend” status on Strava. Being the good people that they are, Strava kept me grounded with the award being for the “path to the tip”. You know what? I’ll take it.
There was a little dabbling with the piano thrown in for good measure before I finally sat down for a bit and proceeded to mainline the following films:-
1917 – absolutely incredible. Very simple story, but the execution of it was just breathtaking and I have no idea how it was achieved. 5*
Rocks – independent, low-budget film with some of those most naturalistic performances you’re likely to see. Brilliant, uncomfortable and heartbreaking. 5*
Bombshell – I was a little disappointed with this. For a story caught up in the early days of the #metoo movement, it felt a little messy and that “shock” value of the horrible truth of what Roger Ailes had been doing over the years had somehow been lost. Great performances though. 3*
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan – plenty of stuff to shock and guiltily laugh at. The fearlessness and bravery of Sacha Baron Cohen and Maria Bakalova as they put themselves in these situations with mostly crazy, deluded, americans is staggering. And also very, very funny. The Giuliani sequence you may have read about makes for incredibly uncomfortable viewing – particularly having previously watched Bombshell. 4*
There may have been an overly large bowl of English Lakes Thunder & Lightning ice cream and half a bag of Jelly Babies demolished throughout the course of this mini movie marathon.
