The church at Cassington

Having stayed overnight at a lovely old pub in the gorgeous village of Cassington, we obviously had to take Dash for a good long walk. We encountered stunning old stone buildings, babbling streams, fields full of elegant equines and this beautiful old church. I do love exploring new places and having a dog is such a good incentive.

St Peter's is a fine Norman church with lovely woodwork and glass. It was built in the early years of the 12th century by Geoffrey de Clinton, treasurer to Henry I.

The church was altered and added to in the 14th century - these changes included the spire and porches and the insertion of new windows. The nave has some early woodwork:, including the pews which are probably fourteenth or fifteenth century. The stained glass in the nave is also interesting: none of it originally belonged to Cassington, it was all brought in from elsewhere, some from Christ Church in Oxford.
