Weka Pass Railway

Climb aboard for a ride on the heritage Weka Pass Railway!  12.8km of track through farmland, vineyards and limestone cuttings, passengers carried by restored locomotives and carriages.

Locomotive Dg791 (diesel-electric) was built by the English Electric Company in London in 1956.  In its previous life it worked predominantly on South Island mainlines.  It was purchased by Weka Pass Railway in 1983 and began pulling trains on the line in 1984.


Every locomotive and carriage has a story of purchase and restoration within an organisation that is totally voluntary.  


Of course you have to purchase a ticket at the ticket office first!  And have it clipped twice by the guard, on the trip out and then on the way back. The guards, station masters and all the staff show lots of enthusiasm and it's clear they are dedicated to the preservation of our rail heritage.


The train is usually pulled by steam locomotive A428, which was built in1909.  However due to the pandemic its annual inspection and certification has been delayed and it won't be back until 2021.
