Where does this road got to?
Chris often says '-shall we see what is down here?' and we can drive miles without finding very much but today we took a turn off to Okiwi Bay on the road to French Pass off the main route through Marlborough Sound to Nelson and it was well worth it. We may have missed out on sparkling seas yesterday but we saw them aplenty today.
We left the vineyards in cloud but the weather soon improved and we stopped for coffee at Havelock before moving on to Pelorus Bridge. Soon after was the sign off the main route which we decided to follow. We were not disappointed. First we saw Pukekos in the fields and then began to climb a twisty road. At a sign called ' Goat Hill Track' we opted to take the 15 minute walk to the 'Lookout'. This is what we saw. We should have known by the name that it was to be a climb but it was well worth it.
The tree in the picture is covered in Ratapiki, a vine which climbs to the forest canopy and produces lovely red flowers.
The view is of Croisilles Harbour looking out to Tasman Bay.
Later we descended to Okiwi Bay itself which is mainly holiday homes with a small number of retirement dwellings and a holiday park. We went to the holiday park for a cup of tea and had a very interesting conversation with the lady who built it 20 years ago. Most people go for the fishing and scuba diving. It is very beautiful but takes a bit of getting to!
We are now in our studio apartment in Motueka for two nights. The guy running it is from Nottingham. We spend quite a bit of time guessing each others accents!
