The Land Where the Beech Trees Grow ...
Wilton Park, Hawick, this afternoon. We had an easy stroll while we waited till it was time to pick up our fortnightly Click and Collect. The last section of this wonderful park is where the rugby pitches are ..... but above them is a lovely avenue of old, older and ancient beech trees. And there are some seedlings amongst them. Life goes on.
I'll always remember our years here when I see beech. Though I curse our hedges, with the leaves that take six months of raking to get rid of (and the years they take to break down to fabulous mould), and the ancient tree on the boundary that sheds huge boughs from time to time and threatens to demolish our vegetable garden, and us, if we are unlucky enough to be standing under it when the time comes. That tree is marked on 19th century maps, has hearts and initials carved into it. I'll be glad to go, but sorry to leave.
