Southrey Church
After Bri had finished work and we'd had lunch I suggested we drive out to the little village of Southrey to take some photos of their unusual little church.
It was built in1898 by a local carpenter named Richard Turner with the help of local residents for the grand cost of £130. It stands on a concrete base incorporating stones from Bardney Abbey.* It was only meant to be temporary, but it still is there and has been very well maintained.
One notable addition in recent times is the five paned stained glass window to commemorate World War 1 and all the servicemen from the village in the past century. (See extra)
The village is tiny, by a river and feels quite remote from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is a lovely little place!
*(I remember seeing the ruined abbey on bus journeys into Lincoln when I lived at Woodhall Spa - nothing remains of it now. Local people would say "Were you born in Bardney?" to someone who did not close the door behind them as the doors to the Abbey had been removed by monks in repentance at having refused to admit the remains of St Oswald in the year 679!)
