In my own back yard
I’m usually in New York all fall, so I never knew that this Japanese maple turned such a bright red. (The older one in the front yard, a different variety, has always gone straight from green to brown.) There are actually three layers of foliage here—a bit of asparagus fern in the foreground, a branch of the nearby Podocarpus tree in the middle, and then the maple beyond it.
