Toboggans in Monte

It's now a tourist attraction, pricey rather than practical, but in the old days the toboggan was the Madeiran equivalent of the Sedan Chair. It was a respectable way that gentlefolk were transported around the cobbled streets of Monte.

Then came the railway, taking goods and people up the dizzy heights. But sadly there was an accident, fatalities, and the railway was no more - although they do still have the tracks on part of the route.

We went up to Monte on the number 20 bus. Crazy driver, but he did blow his horn before swinging madly round the corners and manoeuvring between walls, parked vehicles, other buses and cones. I suspect that the speeds are the only way of getting up to the top.

Not for the faint-hearted.

But then, neither are the toboggans.
