Camara de Lobos

Churchill loved this fishing village. He used to paint the pretty houses in the light.

We had a lovely lunch at a restaurant near the caves. (Doca do Cavacas which I have previously blipped) then we walked the rest of the coastal path to Camara de Lobos. As we turned the final corner I got a bit of an idea of what Churchill had loved.

The village was named for the sea lions (lobos) that used to bask on the rocks. They're not there now. They're protected on the Islhas Desertas but that's for another day.

Now the village has fallen on rather hard times. More beggars than in Funchal and fishermen playing cards to while away the time. A little run down and shabby among the charm and authenticity.

Madeira is generally quiet this year and the importance of tourism to the local economy make this rather worrying.
