Beneath Biscay

Saturday morning walk around town to take some photos and buy a few groceries.

First stop the promenade, to take a few shots of the surfers at play.

Next I headed towards the Plaza San Miguel a.k.a. La Plazuela. On the way I purchased my first take away coffee from an otherwise closed café, La Bella Vida in Calle Capua. The woman who served me told me that they had the serving hatch open to the street installed at the start of the pandemic lockdown. So I drank the very nice coffee and pastry, sat on a bench in the Plazuela.

Next to the Plaza Europa and the grocery shop, via the Paseo de Begoña with its seasonal Castañas (roasted chestnuts) stall and its seasonally coloured trees.

Opposite the shop is the health centre. Here there are people who stick needles in me from time to time. I wouldn't mind a few more in the not too distant future, preferably containing flu and corona virus vaccines.

Behind the health centre, the apartment block where M's parents lived and sister's family still do. For about the last twenty years that's is where we would go to eat on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and for lunch at Epiphany in January. This year sadly no more.

Just visible on the right is the Red and Grey building that is Gijón's central indoor market, completely gutted and rebuilt about ten to fifteen years ago, with the Supercor grocery store below ground level.

They've started selling a passable very low carb bread at a reasonable price. It's 8g Carbs per 100g, unlike normal bread which is 45-60g per 100g. They also sell a passable orange marmalade at 11g per 100g which compares to 50-60g for normal jams and marmalades. I've been waiting for years to find these things. Now I can have my beloved toast and marmalade.

C arrived from A Coruña lunch time. Both her flat mates are away and with lockdown there's nothing much to do, so she decided to come home for a few days. Given that she's officially resident in Gijón, but studying in A Coruña, she should have no difficulty passing the perimeters, but she said there were no checkpoints on the roads anyway.

Looks like our friend B who was in hospital with pneumonia may be discharged on Monday.
