John Bartram (1699-1777)
L2 Day26 - a visit to Painshill Park on a grey day. Quite busy as there is a ‘Snowsafari’ ...lots of big zoo animal structures round the park for a children’s trail. I also visited the kitchen garden and was interested to see this display about John Bartram (1699-1777) who was a Quaker farmer in Pennsylvania who is thought of as America’s first great botanist. He sent boxes of seeds and plants to England including some to Painshill. He also sent plants and detailed descriptions to the Swedish botanist Linnaeus who used them to develop a new way of naming plants which we use to this day.
