St.Leonard's Tower, West Malling

I took a trip out to Manor Park in West Malling today. Just across the road from the entrance to the park is St.Leonard's Tower.
The history of this 11th Century tower is very little known or what it's original purpose was. There are two main theories - one is that it was part of a castle built by Gandulf (no, not Gandalf from the Lord Of The Rings!), Bishop of Rochester and the other that it was built by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, the half brother of William the Conqueror.
It was in the news today as a key which opened the doors of the tower had been returned almost 50 years after it disappeared. The large brass key was sent along with an anonymous note to English Heritage. The mystery sender, who said they "borrowed" the key in 1973, wrote "Sorry for the delay".
The key is thought to have been made around the 19th Century. It still fits the keyhole of the doors to the tower but no longer rotates. Still, not bad after nearly 50 years!
