Season of goodwill

I got an early Christmas present this evening - a bike marking kit and a hefty D-lock. Apparently I live in in area of high bike theft (I didn't know there were any that weren't) and the police have chosen a few streets to see whether they can make a difference by encouraging us to QR-code our bikes, to record them on a national register and to lock them up more effectively. They are installing better bike racks on our street too. I signed up to the scheme about ten days ago and this evening at the agreed time a police officer arrived at my door to hand everything over.
