Town Church
I believe this church may still hold the Guinness World Record for the closest a church is to a pub in the British Isles. The pub is the building on the right and it is far closer at the top where the gargoyle almost touches the pub.
But of interest here is the stonework under the window that has been repaired. The reason for this is because when the island first had a fire engine in around 1773 it was garaged inside the church and this was the doorway.
And there it remained until 1822 when John Wilson was responsible for improvements to the Town Church.
Brett (quoting from Jacob’s Annals) observes:
Guns, fire engine, and consistory were evicted; the church was new ceilinged; some hitherto closed windows were opened, and others new glassed and beautified......
