Summit

Another gorgeous day - but very cold, not much above freezing all day. We did stuff in the morning then decided to go out for a walk.I fancied going north towards Maulanaskeha (knoll of the hawthorn bush should you be wondering). Himself agreed and announced we would first go across the  heath by the stone circle and up that way.  I had envisaged walking up the little boreen, admiring the mountain and then wandering back again. Oh no, we carried on - up onto the mountain via an incredibly muddy cowpatted route - we may as well go on up and then back down again, he announced.  Up meant scrambling up to the top of Rosskerrig where there is a junction of possible walking routes. You then swing west, go round the mountain and ascend very carefully with an awful lot of up and down.  The going was tough - very boggy, very skidding with patches of ice and frost. The higher we got the more brutal the north easterly wind but the views and colours were quite incredible. Here is Himself Sir Edmund Hillary at the summit. You see that little harbour way below, that's Kitchen Cove - you might even be able to see the little red boat. One of us managed to fall in an icy bog hole up to the top of their welly (only one welly fortunately but there was a lot of squelching to get out and he hadn't even noticed I'd almost disappeared!), We got home just as the sun was setting and a spectacular sunset was going on.  It must be good for us! Tea and toast taken.
