red Letter Day

A red letter day
Is today one
It is if you say
Although now it's gone

Nothing was oustanding
Nothing of great remark
I was not laid lazing
Nor was I up with the lark

The postman dropped no letter
Neither did the alarm ring
It probably could have been better
But at least I heard a robin sing

Really, it was just a day
And I lived through to its end
Just like many spent this way
And many more I've yet to spend

But, in truth, it was special
Because, you see, I was alive
I wasn't ill, nor on trial
I didn't have to beg to survive

I opened a cupboard and found food
I ran a tap and water flowed
My decisions depended on my mood
And not on line that had to be toed

I'm like so many people I know
We have choices that are free
We can decide where and when we go
We decide who we want to see

So yes, a letter of red
Is appropriate for this day
And, when all is done and said
We should be grateful to live this way
