Shelter from the Storm
The weather forecast today was for some rain to come through at about 3pm with good 20km/h winds. Will be good for the America Cup boats as they can get up on their foils.
Completed 2nd coat of staining on the long fence. Decided against continuing in the afternoon with the expected showers that are due.
Decided to go up to Takapuna with Julie and Emma to look at the America's Cup racing which was on the top race course. We then walked up to Milford on the coastal path.
We were a long way from the action. The race we watched had UK INEOS generally behind Italian Luna Rossa. Just as they were starting the last leg, the wind shifted 90 degrees and the race was abandoned and re-run.
With the rain coming down at this point and not a great view, we decided to walk back to Takapuna and watch at the beach cafe.
UK INEOS eventually won the race and are now 4 wins from 4.
Saw their boat heading back to the viaduct from Takapuna Beach. They do go fast. Very impressive.
Next race had all the drama. American Magic were leading by quite a big margin and just had to round the last gate and then head for home on the downward leg. Coming into the gate they are reaching speeds of 44 knots (about 80km/h). Seems like a big gust of wind caught them at the time and they capsized. Significant damage to the boat, but looks like they have managed to save it from sinking. Not sure if they can continue with the regatta. Currently the boat is being towed back to the viaduct at a slow 2 knots. Likely to be back around midnight.
Emma has now left to stay with fiends who are all going up the Northland tomorrow for a week or so.
