On my walk today I visited the four British White cattle which  are "conservation grazing" Whiteshute Ridge, the piece of chalk downland  near my home. They keep down the  scrub over the winter/ spring so a big variety of  wild flowers and  grasses  can bloom there in the summer. Also inhabiting this area are numerous invertebrates, including a few glow worms, as well as vertebrates like slow worms.
This  docile breed of cattle was selected by Hampshire Wildlife  Trust as the area  is close to a housing estate,  and is much frequented by humans and dogs. The project was started a few years ago, and it has proved a successful innovation.
Looking carefully at this  heifer's coat and  ears she seems to be  doing a bit of seed dispersal too!
