Between fen and mountains

Henri Barbusse monument

I walked up to the Henri Barbusse monument today. This walk crosses an area where Resistance fighters were based in the Second World War. The 'Henri Barbusse' monument was erected in their memory after they were hunted down following a savage attack on the  nearby village of Valmanya which was though by the Germans to be a hotbed of resistance. The Henri Barbusse brigade saved most of the villagers but at the cost of their own lives. It was a two hour climb with 600 metres of ascent and quite difficult as the paths had many icy stretches. I did not continue on to the Pic de Cogollo as intended.  I was not well enough equipped as I neared the snow line.
