Ross Fountain - Princes Street Gardens
A stroll through Princes Street Gardens and the Meadows to get some air and exercise. The Ross Fountain stood out against today's brilliant blue sky and snow. The water in the fountain was frozen as were the faces, hands and feet of the figures which you can see in my extra photo. The fountain was sculpted in cast iron by French artist Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann. A local gun maker, David Ross, bought it at the 1862 Great Exhibition in London and gifted it to the city of Edinburgh (found it too big for his garden maybe!). It was 10 years before the fountain was erected due to the controversy over the naked figures!
