Once in a Generation ?

Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Agreement

It's a dreich day here in Edinburgh today - so time to create a collage and today's I reflect on BJ's visit to Scotland yesterday.
BJ rarely visits Scotland and when he does he is cocooned amongst the party faithful - few as they are. But the fact he made the trip at all (and during a pandemic) was reported by many as the result of Tory Ministers being in a panic over the future of the Union.  The other day another poll was published showing the majority of Scots would vote for independence in the next referendum. This was the 20th poll in a row showing a substantial lead for Independence - and that's before any campaign has formally got underway.
BJ was interviewed by the press in a vaccination laboratory in Livingstone and asked about the view of the Scots to hold another referendum. He commented “There was an independence referendum in 2014 which was clearly advertised by leading members of the SNP, including possibly including the current First Minister as a once in a generation event. I think we should stick to that.”

So I felt I should check the terms of the Edinburgh Agreement (forming part of my collage) which sets out the conditions under which 2014 referendum may be held - and there is no statement to the effect that there cannot be any further referenda on the same subject if the people of Scotland so desire.
And as for the words you have 'a once in  a generation opportunity' (or similar) - this is a turn of phase and IMHO can't be construed as a binding commitment. However the subject is worth fact checking and I'm pleased to say the work has been done in this article and the claim by the Unionists that the SNP vowed indyref was 'once in a lifetime' opportunity was found to be "false and deliberately misleading".
