King Alfred's Cakes
A popular story, often told, concerns King Alfred. The legend says that while he was on the run from the vikings, he took refuge in the house of a peasant woman. She asked him to watch the cakes, which were probably small bread loaves, but distrated by other thoughts he let them burn, and was scolded by the woman for his neglect of the task. On a fallen tree in the woods this morning, I photographed these fungi. As far as I know, they are Daldinia Concentrica, popularly known as King Alfred's Cakes.
