Little Dennis

Little Dennis preceded Pendennis Castle and apart from the ruined Falmouth Manor is probably the oldest building in the Falmouth area. It was built at the high water mark as the original artillery fort or blockhouse as cover for the harbour approaches.

Built of killas rubble with granite dressing stones directly on to the bedrock, D-shaped, it’s walls are nearly 3m thick and miniature battlements face seawards. Inside there is a large granite fireplace and the remains of a staircase. The wooden roof is gone of course, but you can still see the stone sockets for the beams. It’s just 9m wide by 10m long and the main gunport makes a great viewpoint across to St Mawes castle opposite.

Sam and I went today, very windy, occasional rain but exactly as I remember from the last time I went down to it, got to be a couple of years ago.

Covid ‘Checkers’ about on the coastal roads and paths, but it was quiet, maybe the weather is putting people off and this is only a taste of the cold we can expect at the weekend.
We watched a RNAS Culdrose Merlin carrying out winching drills with the lifeboat out in the bay and a couple of small boats moving in and out.

Really enjoyed my day with Samantha.
