Skating on thin ice

Heather and I found our way into the far fields for the first time since the flooding. Unfortunately we underestimated how wet they still were under a thickish layer of ice - not thick enough to hold our weight though. It was hard work getting across the field in these conditions and I see my Fitbit logged it as strenuous exercise.

Later we went round Hinksey Park where the boating lake was frozen and children playing on the ice. As we went round the far side which is in the sun the ice was only a few mm thick. A brave/foolish boy kept coming towards us. We warned him several times that the ice was too thin but he kept coming, only heeding our warnings as the ice started to crack beneath him.

Then a toddler fell through in another place, caught just in time by a parent who poured the freezing water out of tiny wellies.

Luckily the water is at most a foot deep and with vigilant parents on hand no one was at risk of anything more than a freezing cold dip.
