Blackcap from the Living Room window
Or 'browncap' since it is a female. Most UK warblers migrate to as far as Africa for the winter but more are beginning to winter even as far north as here in Orkney and blackcaps are the most likely to stay. Even so, this one may have come in on strong easterlies over the last couple of weeks, winds that also brought in lots of redwing, song thrush, robins etc. The apples are really out for waxwings but no sign of any so far. I started putting out nyjer seed a couple of weeks ago and the feeder has now been discovered by goldfinches and they visit every day. This is a species that has greatly increased in Orkney in the last few years, perhaps a combination of mild weather and more people putting out food (extra).
