Tammerkoski

Thanks for commenting yesterday's Road on Ice -blip, and also for stars:)

The icy theme of mine continues today with the rapid through which the lake Nasijarvi's water runs. This is Tammerkoski in the centre of Tampere city and as you can see there is old factorys on both sides of the Tammerkoski rapids, today mainly used by small industry and offices, museums, shops etc...

The weather was cloudy and quite cold as - as so often here - there was hard wind from north, from icy Nasijarvi lake. I'm happy as we had a good and nice shopping walk today (but did not buy anything though). Very convenient day ;)

Some history of the Tammerkoski upper and centre rapids:

On the left side there was Finlayson, the cotton factory established in 1820 by James Finlayson. The first electric light in the Nordic countries was also lit here in 1882 as the factory was already ready run by Carl von Nottbeck. During the family von Nottbeck's time the factory gave shelter to almost anyone who was in need. The von Nottbeck -family founded close the factory schools, hospitals, accomodation/ homes.. And they had also police, firemen in the factory. The family made a lot of good in different ways to it's workers and to the Tampere-town, but in 1917 as the circumstances in Finland were very bad cause of the wars and maybe due of the revolution, the von Nottbeck family left Finland. In parish registers is only told that they left to unknown place.

The city's engineering industry was bolstered by the manufacturer of grinding machines and water turbines Tampereen Pellava- ja Rauta-Teollisuus Oy (Tampella). The factory was on the right side on the rapid and was established on the upper reaches of the Tammerkoski rapids in 1861.

The island down in the left is called Konsulinsaari. In 1877 there was last time a cafe on it. The bridge Satakunnansilta (where I took the blip) was built in 1900, and sinced then the Konsulinsaari has been empty. Or almost empty, today there was some ducks.... as there is also in stream on the right...

In Virtual Tampere link here, there is some summerish scenes from the centre rapids.

The summer seems to be yet so far away at the time....
