#9 'A history of Chailey in 50 images'

The 9th image in my weekly series and we move on to the 14th century. The area is dominated by yeoman farmers working lands around the edges of the common land. Here we look down from the unenclosed common land of the sandstone ridge onto Great Noven farm. We know, from the tax records, that a farm of this name has been located here since at least 1327. Many of the other familiar farm and estate names (Ades, Bineham, Bower, Hooke, Tutts etc) are all found in the records of this time when taxes of a twentieth were levied.

Previous entries in this history are on: 5th, 8th, 22nd and 27th January, 2nd, 11th, 17th and 24th February.
