Finding My Bearings

Spring expotition!

Pooh had had a tiring day. You remember how he discovered the North Pole; well, he was so proud of this he asked Christopher Robin if there were any other Poles such that a Bear of Little Brain could discover.

“There’s a South Pole,” said Christopher Robin, “and I expect there’s an East Pole and a West Pole, though people don’t like talking about them.”

Pooh was very excited when he heard this, and suggested they should have an expotition to discover the East Pole.

As a geography teacher, I love the fact that we live so close to the Prime Meridian line. Even though, of course, many millions of other people do, too, my son and I still enjoyed standing with one foot in each hemisphere today on the way back from the orthodontist.

In the year 2000, the 'Millennium Stone' (picture in 'extras') was placed along the line in the grounds of East Grinstead Town Council's offices but there are a few of these much smaller markers positioned on residential roads as well. The line goes straight through several homes and it did make me laugh to think of these poor people having to travel all the way from one hemisphere to another just to make a cup of tea!
