the joy of slurry

Here is the field which surrounds our house in a kind of horseshoe shape. (The big tree is at the end of our garden). 

As you can see, the dairy farmer who owns the field has been spreading slurry on it for the past few days. I don't envy him this job, which entails driving a tractor round and round the field, going back to the slurry pit to fill the tank and then repeating this process many times a day.

As I don't know much about slurry, I looked up some info. Turns out that slurry spreading is a dangerous business, responsible for 27 deaths in 15 years in the UK. It can also be bad for the environment. Farmers are facing increasing regulations on the timing of spreading and equipment used - see here if you're interested...
